PODCAST: Zooming into Your Community Part 4: Blouberg, Limpopo

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Bordering Botswana, Blouberg Local Municipality in Limpopo Province takes its name from a mountain range. According to the latest Census, it consists of 125 villages and has over 45 000 households  —  56. 3% of those are female-headed.

The population of Blouberg declined from 182 000 in 2000 to 176 00, before declining further to 172 000 in 2016.

The amalgamation with Aganang led to an increase in the population starting from 2015 onwards by 1.2%, but still far lesser than the population of Blouberg alone in 2000.

The decline can be attributed to among other things, the low fertility rate and high mortality rate.

27.4% of the people have no schooling, 15.7 have matric and 5.0% have higher education.

5.7% of the dwellings have flush toilets connected to sewerage, 19.3% have their waste picked up weekly, 7.8 have piped water inside their dwelling and 88.4% have electricity for lighting.

In this weekly feature, SABC News captures the voices of communities on their experience with services delivered by their municipality. This week, Digital News producer Lebo Tshangela speaks to the community leader and residents of Blouberg.
