The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that the investigation into the murder of African National Congress (ANC) Ward 17 councillor Sbusiso “Khekhe” Khwela, who was shot and killed on Thursday in Klaarwater, west of Durban, has been taken over by the KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team.
Police say the team will lead and coordinate the investigation.
A manhunt is underway for the suspect.
The community of Klaarwater, west of Durban, is reeling following the brazen, broad daylight murder of Khwela.
Khwela was shot and killed inside his office by a lone gunman who posed as someone who needed assistance from him before, pulling out a gun and opening fire.
His death comes just three months before the local government elections in November.
Khwela has been described by the ANC as a committed and dedicated councillor.
He had served for two terms as councillor in the eThekwini Metro but had indicated he was not going to seek re-election.
The municipality and the ANC say his death is a huge blow.
Whilst the motive for the murder is unknown, the incident has heightened safety concerns, especially for political leaders and councillors.
The ANC has urged its members to remain calm but alert.
The party has welcomed the Political Killings Task Team taking over the investigation.
Police are investigating a case of murder.
