The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that former paralympian and convicted murderer, Oscar Pistorius suffered minor bruises in a confrontation with another inmate at the Atteridgeville Correctional facility west of Pretoria.

The incident happened about a week ago.

Department spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo says Pistorius and another inmate had an altercation over the use of a public phone.

He says they have launched an investigation: “There must have been an official manning the public phone and the use of it and we’re on record stating that no form of disturbance or chaos is allowed inside correctional facilities because we’ve got to ensure that inmates, officials or our contractors are safe at all times. No matter how minor an incident is, as a department we’ve got a responsibility to ensure that safety of all those in our care is not compromised. He was assessed by our personnel and they were convinced that it was a minor bruise that didn’t even require any form of stitching and there was even no traces of blood.”

Pistorius, 31, was convicted on culpable homicide and sentenced to six year for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

The state appealed the sentence saying it was too lenient.

Last month, the Supreme Court of Appeal changed the sentence to murder and more than doubled his sentence.
