‘Phosa has overlooked ANC procedure by going to court’

Chairperson of the African National Congress’ Subcommittee on Organisational Development Fikile Mbalula says the party’s presidential hopeful Mathews Phosa has overlooked ANC procedure by taking the legal route over the results of the Mpumalanga Provincial General Council.

Phosa filed an urgent application in the Pretoria High Court to nullify the council’s results.  He alleges that the nomination guidelines were violated by allowing a ‘unity vote’.

Mbalula says Phosa has the freedom to do as he pleases. However, the ANC will defend itself where necessary.

“The ANC process starts with the branch. It is the branch that must lodge a complaint. To jump to the court and overlook the ANC process, I don’t see how it will work to his advantage. People have got money. They’ve got lawyers to pay to go to courts and then overlook organisational processes. Court to me should be the last resort. We are a democratic organisation, but not to the detriment of the organisation. The organisation will defend itself.”
