Phopolo Edward Chaane has been crowned the new Kgosi of the Bakgatla Ba Seabe traditional community in the Dr J S Moroka Local Municipality in Mpumalanga.
The inauguration, which has the blessings of the Mpumalanga MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, brings to end the reign of Steve Make Chaane who has been the Kgosi of the community since his crowning in 2001.
The community, including the Traditional Council, is divided over who is the rightful heir to the throne, between the two.
The leader of the group opposed the latest crowning of Phopolo Edward Chaane. Frank Chaane says the Mpumalanga government should not have proceeded with his inauguration because there is a pending court case, which is to be heard in May 2022.
Frank Chaane’s group did not succeed in their attempt to interdict Phopolo Edward Chaane’s inauguration.
He says they will consult their legal team to consider a challenge to the Mpumalanga government over the latest inauguration.
