Phoenix Peace and Development Committee to meet with EFF leaders

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Phoenix Peace and Development Committee is expected to meet with provincial leaders of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) ahead of a planned march by the party on Thursday morning.

The EFF is expected to march to the Phoenix Police Station in response to allegations of racism in the area.

About 36 people were killed in Phoenix during the unrest last month. However, concerns have been raised about the alleged inciteful and divisive messaging around the march.

The coordinator of the Committee, Sham Maharaj,  says the meeting plans to ensure that peace and reconciliation is the central focus. He says the committee is even willing to join the march, should peace be the party’s intention.

“There are different people within the EFF. So I can pick up the phone and phone them and they will take the call, we have that kind of relationship which we have developed in the last 24-48 hours since this issue started. From what I have heard from them, I am quite comfortable that yes, they will meet with our delegation, they will fulfil what they are saying they will do. We have been in contact with the police and Army and the Metro Police and they will also be there,” says Maharaj.
