Mamelodi-born singer, songwriter, poet-activist Vusi Mahlasela who is simply known as “The Voice” has paid tribute to jazz legend Philip Tabane.

Mahlasela says Tabane was an extraordinary musician whose creativity influenced music lovers locally and internationally.

Mahlasela says Dr Tabane, as the musician was affectionately called, might have passed on, but his healing Malombo vibes will live on.

“He was the master of his own music. A composer, an arranger and then he influenced quite a lot of jazz musicians even the other musos who wull collaborate with him. They were respecting the territory that here we are with the great man; we don’t wanna mess it up. But he was not like saying if you play a note that is wrong whatever that is musical therefore it is part of music like silence, it is part of music as well. So he was a very great influencer and then I feel that Mamelodi and South Africa we really lost a sound that is so particular, but not only just that its purpose was healing.”

Tabane died in hospital on Friday, aged 84, after a long illness.
