Petrol increase sends South Africans into social media panic

Reading Time: < 1 minute

South Africans have reacted with dissatisfaction on social media platforms as record high fuel prices kicked in at midnight.

Motorists will now fork out more than R15 a litre for petrol after an increase of 82 cents.

Diesel now costs 87 cents more and paraffin is up by R1.09 a litre.

The price of LP Gas has increased by R1.38 per kilogramme.

This is the third consecutive fuel hike this year.

Energy expert, Sandisiwe Ncemane says the increases have been attributed to the rise in oil prices and a weaker rand.

She says: “It is the cost drivers, the crude, as well as the margins linked to the retail and wholesaling as well as the fuel levies, and the component related to the accident fund. Those would be the four aspects that form the SA fuel costs. Part of what the drive is around energy security is to ensure diversity, affordability and that it does catalyse economic growth.”
