People First participates in Zimbabawe by-elections

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The party of former Zimbabwe Vice President Joice Mujuru, Zimbabwe People First, is standing in an electoral contest for the first time on Saturday.

Mujuru launched the party last year after her expulsion from President Robert Mugabe’s ZANU PF.

Voting is underway in a by-election in Bikita West constituency in south-eastern Masvingo province. The seat fell vacant after the former legislator representing it was jailed on rape charges.

The vote is seen as a barometer of the amount of support Mujuru’s party enjoys, but observers have raised concerns of voter intimidation and voter buying ahead of the by-election.
