Jazz lovers in Port Elizabeth and surroundings are in for a treat this weekend as the New Brighton-based music band, Soul Jazzmen will be celebrating its 50th anniversary through musical performances on Sunday.

The band was formed in 1968 and released its first album titled Inhlupeko (distress) in 1969.

A number of local artists will also be entertaining the crowd at Nangoza Jebe hall in New Brighton.

Soul Jazzmen vocalist Vuyelwa Qwesha Luzipo says the day will be filled with good music.

However, event organiser Bobo Pemba says the event is also meant to acknowledge the role of South Africa’s contribution towards the development of Jazz genres.

“We as South Africans have a unique sound that is only South African and this is our contribution to the universal Jazz so this is our own way of saying to ourselves and recognising our jazz may be different from jazz of the world as jazz from Latin America and in New York is different, we as Africans have a particular tone to which we contribute to the art form globally.”
