Parliament‘s Constitutional Review Committee has requested the extension of its deadline to report on the amendment of Section 25 to allow for expropriation of land without compensation.

The initial deadline for the committee to submit its report was Friday. However, it cannot meet the deadline, although it has mentioned a specific date.

The committee says due to the volume of public inputs received it cannot meet the initial deadline set by Parliament of 28 September.

It has written to the presiding officers of Parliament requesting that the deadline be extended. The committee held public hearings in all nine provinces and later at Parliament.

Co-committee Chairperson Lewis Nzimande says they expect their request to be successful. He says they expect to finalise their work by November due to the busy schedule of Parliament in the fourth quarter.
