Parliament pays tribute to Chiba

Parliament’s two presiding officers have paid tribute to struggle icon Laloo Chiba. National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete and National Council of Provinces Chairperson Thandi Modise say they are deeply saddened by the passing Chiba who died on Friday at the age of 87.

His funeral will be held on Saturday at the Avalon Cemetery Crematorium in Soweto. In a statement released, Modise and Mbete say they extend their heartfelt condolences on behalf of Parliament to Chiba’s wife Luxmi, his daughters, grandchildren, comrades and friends.

They say Chiba who served as an MP after the 1994 and 1999 democratic elections continued with his dedication to entrench a non-racial and not sexist society, even after his retirement from Parliament.
