Parliament committee slams Ex-Prasa board over hiring law firm

The former Prasa board under the stewardship of Popo Molefe has been severely criticised by members of the oversight committee on Transport for appointing Werksman’s Law firm to investigate irregular tenders at the transport agency.

The running costs of Werksman’s investigations are said to more than R100 million. Transport Minister Joe Maswangwanyi on Tuesday briefed the committee on state capture allegations at Prasa.

He says in her “Derailed” report, former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela recommended that these investigations be done by National Treasury.

Maswangwanyi, however, says the former board appointed a private firm and that was an irregular expenditure.

“Why appoint a private investigator when the state has the capacity? We’ve never doubted the state capacity in SA,” says Maswangwanyi.
