Omar stresses importance of talking to kids about sex

According to 2017’s South African Child Gauge survey, one in three children under the age of 18, has been a victim of sexual violence and physical abuse and most parents agree that one of the most uncomfortable conversations they’ve ever had with their children, is about sexual abuse.

Dr Shaheda Omar, from the Teddy Bear Clinic For Abused Children, says that parents need to start communicating with their children as early as possible, as soon as a child starts developing vocabulary.

“Parents need to give children the permission to talk about their genitalia parts of the body. What is also important is that parents need to use correct names and identify the functions of the body parts.”
