N Cape paraplegic races to 30 towns to raise awareness

A paraplegic from Springbok in the Northern Cape aims to race to 30 Namaqualand towns in 10 days to raise awareness about disability.

The paraplegic activist, Brunhild Strauss says there is a lot of stigma attached to disabled persons  while they are the most vulnerable and marginalised.

Strauss became a paraplegic in 2005 through a car accident. His ordeal encouraged him to raise awareness in his community – and secure support for those in special need.

Strauss now wants to take his mission to far-flung areas in Namaqualand.

“I decided to identify more than 20 towns of four municipalities of the Namaqua region; and just to go and give those people with disabilities some dignity. And also that they don’t necessarily think that they have been neglected, or that there is no attention given to them,” says Strauss.

Through his drive he also wants to donate disposable nappies.

“That is my little bit of outreach that I would like to do – just to hand out some disposable nappies. Because that is a product that is very expensive for parents with children with disabilities to afford that on a monthly basis.”
