At least 75 people killed on the roads over the long weekend

The number of deaths on roads in three coastal provinces over the long weekend has risen to at least 75, with the news that the Eastern Cape has experienced a total of 22 fatalities reported from various incidents across the province since Friday.

The Western Cape has reported 34 fatalities over the holiday weekend while 19 fatalities were reported in KwaZulu-Natal. Human error such as speeding, fatigue driving and walking under the influence of alcohol have been cited as the major contributing factors in these incidents.

In KwaZulu-Natal, the Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Zinhle Mngomezulu has details of fatalities in that province, including the latest fatal crash on the N2 near Chatsworth, south of Durban.

“Nineteen people lost their lives on KZN roads over this weekend. The recent accident took place on the N2 Higginson Highway where one person died and four sustained injuries when a driver of a lightweight motor vehicle they were travelling in lost control and overturned. The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage. One count of culpable homicide is being investigated.”
