Mpumalanga police say over 100 people have been arrested due to property destruction following service delivery protests in Secunda.

Shops were looted and angry protestors burned down the Mall@eMba shopping centre.

On Monday, more than a thousand protesters also gathered outside the eMbalenhle Police Station demanding the release of those arrested for public violence, burglary and theft.

Police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd that threatened to torch the police station.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Leonard Hlathi says: “We are saying that even though community members are not happy with services, the destruction of property is tantamount to criminal acts. We are calling for calm in this area because if this continues to happen we will have to arrest more community members.”

“On Tuesday there was attempt to torch the police station. The mall, post office and the filing station were set alight. This is uncalled for and criminal,” says Hlathi.
