Over 100 children killed in fresh clashes in the Afar region of Ethiopia

The United Nations has raised concern over the recent killing of people in the North eastern part of Ethiopia, the Afar region.

The UN Children’s agency (UNICEF) says more than 100 children have succumbed to fighting that has spread from Ethiopia’s Northern region Tigray.

Recent reports from the UN show that over 200 people, including over 100 children, have been killed in the fresh clashes in the Afar region of Ethiopia.

Afar borders the conflict-affected Tigray Region on one side and Djibouti on the other.

UNICEF says the fighting has also destroyed vital food supplies in the areas that are already showing emergency levels of malnutrition and food insecurity.

UNICEF warns on increase in children requiring malnutrition treatment in Ethiopia’s Tigray region:

The UN already warns, the conflict in Tigray has exposed over 400 000 to unbearable conditions.

UNICEF reported that over 160 000 children are affected by the conflict. Recent fighting in the country’s North has led to an additional 100 000 being newly displaced, this is, in addition, to already 2 million that have been forced to flee their homes since November last year.

The warring factions, the government, and the TPLF blame each other for the atrocities. Calls by the UN and the international community for a ceasefire are yet to be heeded.
