The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) has welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa‘s announcement authorising the Special Investigating Unit to investigate Eskom‘s coal contracts, as well as Transnet‘s operations.
The proclamations gazetted on Friday require the SIU to launch an investigation into activities at Eskom and Transnet since January 2010.
These include coal and diesel contracts, maladministration at the Medupi, Kusile and Ingula power station projects, as well as contracts with McKinsey, Trillian and Regiments Capital.
Outa CEO Wayne Duvenhage says the investigations are long-overdue.
“Outa over the years has been provided with a lot of information from whistle-blowers with regards to deep-seated corruption; you know the Ingula project alone went from R8.9-billion to over R30-billion. We see Medupi, Kusile and the on-going increases to the capital expenditure projects suggested they’re fraught with corruption and over-spending, so we really do welcome the president’s announcement and we look forward to working with the SIU, and seeing the results of this work,” says Duvenhage.
