The Oudtshoorn Municipality in the Little Karoo has dismissed social media posts alleging that it intends to privatise the Cango Caves.
The municipality says the posts are misleading and false. It recently embarked on a campaign to try and save the historical landmark, which has suffered huge financial losses due to COVID-19.
The Cango Caves are a major tourist attraction in the Southern Cape region.
Oudtshoorn Mayor, Chris Macpherson, says they are developing an economic recovery plan but there are no plans for privatisation.
The Tourism Department wants all three spheres of government and the private sector to ensure the site is economically sustainable.
