Other provinces are lobbying to host indigenous games – Mafu

Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Deputy Minister Nocawe Mafu could not confirm where the 2020 National Indigenous Games (IG) will be held. The 2019 edition was hosted successfully without incident in Seshego outside Polokwane last week.

It was for the fifth time in a row the township hosted the event. Mafu says other provinces are now lobbying to host the week-long festival which comes with great economic spin-offs.

The Department last week invited a contingent from Europe to share trade in some of the IG codes like Kho-Kho that are played globally. Mafu adds that the bigger picture is to have some of the games played in the Olympics.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) were the overall winners of the 14th edition defending their top position for a record ninth successive time. In the School Sport division, KZN came second behind Gauteng and ahead of North West. In the community sport section, KZN finished first ahead of Limpopo and Western Cape respectively.

Limpopo MEC for Sport Thandi Moraka was impressed with the host province’s improvement in the field of play.

Moraka says the number of fans, especially young people coming to watch the games, have been better this year compared to previous years.

The MEC notes supporting events like the fashion show and cultural village that helped draw people to the games. – Report by Lethabo Kganyago
