Reading Time: 2 minutes

The prosecution in the Oscar Pistorius trial in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria says it has a large number of formal witnesses still to come after it has called all its lay witnesses.

The second week of the trial is expected to get underway at 09:30 on Monday morning.

Security guard, Pieter Baba, will continue giving evidence. Baba is the ninth witness.

Four of the nine State witnesses have testified on the two additional charges that the athlete is facing with regards to contravening the Firearms Control Act.

The owners of Tasha’s restaurant in Melrose Arch, where it is alleged Pistorius shot his firearm, testified that the Paralypian paid the food bill after the incident that had left patrons shocked.

Boxer, Kevin Lerena, told the court that Pistorius’ friend, Darren Fresco took the blame on Pistorius’ request to avoid media scrutiny.

The accused’s ex-girlfriend, Samantha Taylor later told the court how he had allegedly fired a shot through the open sunroof of a car.

Taylor further told the court that the athlete always kept his gun by his bedside.

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court ordered him to hand in all his firearms as part of his bail conditions.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Nathi Mncube, says they have divided the State witnesses into three categories.

“We have 107 witnesses as you know, and we have categorised them into three categories. The first is the lay witnesses and then we have the formal witnesses and of course you will have your experts,” says Mncube.

“So what we are busy with now is the lay witnesses and when we are finished with them we will call the formal witnesses and then our experts. We don’t expect to finish with all of them,” adds Mncube.
