Reading Time: < 1 minute

The semi-autonomous town of Orania in the Northern Cape is holding its own unique election today. The Chief Executive Officer of Orania, Joost Strydom, says following a court case in 2000, which gave the town its own unique municipal system, the residents of the town will be voting for their own councilors. Orania can make its own municipal bylaws, choose its own representatives and also determine its own municipal fees. Strydom says residents have turned up in their numbers throughout the day, signifying the town’s independence.
