Opposition parties in the North West disappointed by last week's SOPA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Opposition parties in the North West legislature have described last week’s State of the Province Address by Premier Bushy Maape as disappointing and lacking inspiration. The sentiments emerged during the debate on the State of the Province Address in Mahikeng.
During his address, Maape said the unemployment rate in the province is at 35.7 percent. He also promised the implementation of infrastructure projects including the completion of new schools and the improvement of roads. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF’s) Shakes Botswe accused the premier of having embarrassed himself and members of the legislature.
“In the history of this province, you presided over the worst-ever State of the Province Address. You took a conscious decision to embarrass both us and yourself. Honourable Speaker, the overall unemployment rate in the province was sugar-coated by the premier as currently being 35.7. But, the real unemployment rate according to Stats SA latest quarter labour force survey is at 52.2 percent,” says Botswe.
Democratic Alliance Chief Whip, Freddy Sonakile says the speech by Maape failed to inspire public confidence.
“The SOPA must be a disappointment to the people of North West because it lacked any concrete plans to improve the state of the economy, governance and service delivery. Based on the number of summits the premier mentioned, it sounds like a government with only one plan. More meetings, more summits, more discussions. All talk no work. Maybe the honourable premier should add a kick out failing politician summit and change the face of government,” says  Sonakile.
