Opposition make their demands ahead of SONA

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Opposition parties are making a range of demands on President Jacob Zuma for him to deal with in Thursday evening’s State of the Nation address.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) wants him to apologise for allegedly wasting taxpayers’ money and to fire his legal counsel over the Nkandla matter.

“The President should have complied with the remedial action warranted in the Public Protector’s report with regard to his Nkandla homestead. The ACDP calls on the President to fire his legal team who advised him that he did not have to comply with the remedial action and pay for the non-security features at Nkandla,” says ACDP Member of Parliament, Rev Kenneth Meshoe.

Meshoe says they would like to know what plans government has in place should South Africa face a draught as we have just experienced. The ACDP believes that more dams should to be built.

“The president must also highlight how government plans to ensure food security and also tell us what measures are in place to guarantee that the price of food will remain affordable to the poorest of the poor,” he says.

The Economic Freedom Fighters is demanding to know the reasons why former Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene was replaced last year.

The Democratic Alliance expects President Zuma to explain why the plan he presented at last year’s SONA, has allegedly not been carried out. “As the DA you want the President to put the economy and jobs at the fore front last years during his SONA the launched a nine point plan that we have not seen come to fruition,” says DA Spokesperson Mabine Seabe.

While the African National Congress expects President Zuma to address progress in implementing the National Development plan in his SONA.

ANC Caucus Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says the NDP covers priorities like inequality and unemployment. “We expect the president to look at the progress that has been made with regards to the NDP the plan is instructive with regards to the fight against unemployment and inequality and poverty and the creation of jobs,” says Mothapo.
