Final farewell for Morgan Tsvangirai

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Regional opposition leaders, imminent persons, trade unionists and diplomats have bid farewell to Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai in Buhera, Zimbabwe.

Former Kenya Prime Minister Raila Odinga delivered the awaited address but MDC-T interim leader Nelson Chamisa had to call for calm before supporters could allow a representative of the governing ZANU-PF to speak.

A final farewell to Tsvangirai, he will no longer steer the course of politics in Zimbabwe.

His quest to defeat former President Robert Mugabe saw him beaten by police and jailed during election campaigning.

For the trails he experienced in his life time, MDC-T supporters are still not ready to embrace the ruling ZANU-PF.

Earlier in the week President Emmerson Mnangagwa appealed to politicians to honour Tsvangirai’s legacy by making the country’s upcoming elections fair and non-violent.

But opposition peers say it’s all in their hands

Kenya opposition leader Raila Odinga says: “Rigged elections will not help Africa, they help to perpetuate dictatorship and mediocrity on our continent, that is why recently I decided to take an oath, we must stand for proper elections that say how the people voted.”

Former Zimbabwe vice president Joice Mujuru says: “The opposition parties lets unite, we can work together so we can end the suffering because it is unbearable, we know the fight you began Tsvangirai.”

Meanwhile South African Political Economist Moeletsi Mbeki urged the MDC-T to unite if they are to make a good showing at the 2018 elections.

Zimbabwean artist Oliver Mtukidzi, performed his popular song, Neria.

The lyrics are about the plight of harassed widows. Some say the performance was in solidarity with Tsvangirai’s wife Elizabeth who is embroiled in a publicized drama with her husband’s family.

Tsvangirai succumbed to colon cancer at a Johannesburg hospital last Wednesday.
