The South African Police Service (SAPS) efforts to deal with the July 2021 unrest in Gauteng were hampered by leakages of crucial Operation Plan documents. Gauteng Deputy Police Commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni says the leakage compelled police to withdraw the plan that was meant to mitigate the volatile situation in parts of the province. He says a senior member of the police was subsequently held responsible for leaking the document, which was also traced beyond the borders of South Africa.
Mthombeni was speaking at the Human Rights Commission hearings into the July 2021 unrest in Sandton north of Johannesburg.
“Consequence management has to apply which one had to apply looking into principles of labour relations. So what happened in July unrest for example the Pan African Mall in Alex, we had to take someone to the disciplinary process. Meanwhile, I have outlined clearly how we operated. How I was on the ground,” says Mthombeni.
