Only when violated, we hear about kids: William Bird

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Director of Media Monitoring Africa, William Bird says the only time we see children in the media is when something hideous and horrible has happened to them.

Speaking on Morning Live Bird says, “The children account for 35% of our population but we see them in roughly 8 percent of the news so there is dramatic under representation of them.”

Commemorating International Children’s Day, Bird was talking about the coverage and portrayal of children in the media.

“We need to look at protection and prevention, how do we can stop children from being violated,” he says.

Bird urged the media to find different angles and tell the public different things when reporting about children.
