One SA optimistic about independent candidates being able to stand for elections

The One South Africa Movement has voiced optimism over independent candidates being given the chance to stand for elections, saying the public can now choose better governance at a local level.

Political parties and independent candidates had until Monday night to register for the October 27 Local Government Elections.

To date, over 350 independent candidates have either captured or submitted their nominations.

One SA Movement leader Mmusi Maimane says they have been supporting and equipping independent candidates across the country.

Maimane says despite the challenges that independent candidates may face in elections, there is optimism that communities will support participants aiming to make a positive difference in society.

“We have been working with a number of associations across the country. We also are endorsing the principle of independence. We set up organisations in communities that are able to contest for elections. We have always been driven by the principle of power to the people and let the people govern at a local level. So, it has gone well. There are a number of associations so we will have more candidates coming through,” says Maimane.
