One person killed in Cape Town protest

One person has died during violent service delivery protests on Jakes Gerwel Drive near Mitchells Plain, in Cape Town. Two others were also injured.

The situation in the area has been tense and volatile since Wednesday.

During the protests 30 people were arrested for public violence.

Cape Town Metro Police spokesperson, Wayne Dyason, says police have also been shot at with live ammunition during the demonstrations.

Dyason says incidents of stone throwing and burning of tyres occurred and officers also reported incidents of live rounds being fired at them.

“SAPS used rubber bullets and stun grenades to disperse the crowds. One person was run over by a taxi and was severely injured. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Two other people were also injured during the protest action.”
