One mine worker has died and four others are unaccounted for at Sibanye-Stillwater’s Kloof mine near Westonaria south-west of Johannesburg.
It’s understood five mineworkers were overcome by gas and heat while underground.
The other four are yet to be found.
Mine workers union AMCU has expressed concern at the latest death.
The union says it does not understand why a manager allegedly forced employees to go underground even though Mineral Resources reportedly issued an order to stop production.
Sibanye-Stillwater mine could only confirm the death. Its spokesperson says he is overseas and could not comment further.
