Officials in court over illegal release of foreign nationals

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A formal bail application of nine government officials accused of illegally releasing at least 36 foreign national parolees will be heard later in March.

Some of the accused appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Police say most of the parolees released illegally, were drug smugglers.

The accused officials from the Departments of Home Affairs and Correctional Services were arrested on charges related to corruption.

It’s believed they received bribes of between R3000 and R6000 for early releases.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says this is a case of its own kind.

Phindi Louw-Mjonondwane says, “All the accused are expected to bring a formal bail application on the 29th of March and we need to put it on record now, as a State, that we will be opposing such bail application.”
