Political parties have until the 13th of March to ensure their eligibility to contest the national elections in May.

The official election timetable by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has now been gazetted.

It contains important dates and deadlines for political parties and information for voters. Commissioner Mosotho Moepya says all details surrounding what to expect leading up to election day is in the gazette.

“It sets out exactly what will happen and when that has to happen. For example it will say tomorrow the Chief Electoral Officer must give notice that the provisional voter’s rolls are now available for inspection. And then it will sequentially set out the dates up to Election Day. As we see it – on the 5 of March the Chief IE will publish the list of all the voting stations and their address so you will know where the voting will be taking place,” says Moepya.

Political parties have until March 13 to ensure their eligibility to contest the national elections in May. This is outlined in the gazetted election timetable. More than 300 parties are registered with the IEC.

“They are recognised as registered parties in this country. The only thing they need to do is pay a deposit and submit a list of candidates. By the 11th of April we will have finished that process the date on which the list of candidates must be submitted to the commission is the 13th of March. All parties who wish to contest must pay and submit a list of candidates,” says Moepya.
