Transport Minister Blade Nzimande says he is confident that the new Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) Board will bring stability to the rail agency.

SABC Board member Khayisile Kweyama was appointed as chairperson of the new Board last week.

Nzimande says other members on the Board include people with legal expertise and a member from the previous Board to ensure continuity.

Other Board members who have been appointed to Prasa include former Sanral Chief Executive Officer Nazeer Ali, and a former Correctional Services Deputy Commissioner Jenny Shreiner.

Nzimande says one of the first tasks for the new Board should be to close the loopholes on corruption. “That is why one of the first things they have to do is to study the Public Protector’s report, detail which of course I understand that it is being challenged in court.  There is also a Treasury report which I understand examines all tenders above R10 million in Prasa.”

Nzimande also says the most important mandate for the Board is to ensure that Prasa has safe trains that are running on time.”
