The Minister of Employment and Labour Thulas Nxesi is on a whirlwind tour of areas affected by the recent looting to assess the damage and to provide income relief to affected workers.

Hundreds of shopping malls were destroyed during the looting leaving tens of thousands of workers unemployed.

Thulas Nxesi and his top officials visited affected areas in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday.

On Thursday they went to Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg and moved to Soweto. According to official figures, around 75 000 workers are now jobless following the recent riots and looting.

“The President through Cabinet decided that government must step in help the affected workers,” the Minister says.

In terms of the new UIF Destroyed, Affected or Looted Workplaces Temporary Relief Scheme, employers must apply for financial relief for their affected employees. Once approved, the money will be paid directly into the workers’ bank accounts.

Payments will range between R3 500 to R17 700 a month.

Nxesi had strong words for those who carried out the looting and the destruction of property.

“If you demand something you must not destroy what you already have.”

Nxesi is also scheduled to visit affected places in Thembisa, east of Johannesburg.
