Numsa) says negotiations with SAA management to end the ongoing workers strike collapsed.

National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says negotiations with South African Airways (SAA) management to end the ongoing workers strike have collapsed.

Numsa says the national carrier refused to agree to the workers’ revised salary demand of 6.5%.

Management says it cannot afford more than 5.9%.

The union is expected to brief the media in Johannesburg on Wednesday on a way forward with regards to their strike action.

Numsa spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola says, “We had managed to negotiate various things and we put 6.5% as an offer on the table, they were agreeing to the demand in relation to the in-sourcing demand that we had made. At the 11th hour, the South African Airways management did an about turn and withdrew the 6.5% that was on the table and for us this is completely unacceptable. This is what we call negotiating in bad faith.”

About 3 000 union affiliated workers downed tools last week Friday demanding an 8% salary increase.
