NUM to march against retrenchment at Sibane Stillwater

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) will march against the retrenchment of 2000 workers by Sibanye Gold Stillwaters in Westonaria on Gauteng’s West Rand on Monday.

NUM says other organisations will also take part in the march. The union says mine management sent workers retrenchment letters. It says workers have already been instructed not to go underground.

NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mamburu says, “We embarked on a 60 day consultation, but unfortunately we could not reach an agreement. They rejected all our proposals to stop the forced retrenchment but this shows that the company Sibanye Gold Stillwater is arrogant and they did not want to listen to anything. That is the reason our members are marching saying that they are not going to allow more than 2000 workers to be retrenched.”
