NUM confirms coal sector strike

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has confirmed that it plans to embark on a strike in the coal sector.

This comes after wage negotiations with mining firms deadlocked.

NUM spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu says they are yet to decide when the strike will start.

He says a government mediator has granted the union a strike certificate, which is an important requirement before downing tools.

A protracted strike in the coal sector could affect power supply in the country, as about 85% of it is generated from  fossil fuel.
