National Union of Mineworkers (Num) says it will wait and see how the Mineral Department’s investigation will unfold at the Sibanye Beatrix Gold mine, in the Free State.

Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane announced on Friday that operations at the Sibanye Gold mine in Theunessen would remain suspended until proper investigations were conducted.

This follows Wednesday’s incident in which more than a thousand mineworkers were trapped underground. 955 miners were only rescued on Friday morning.

“We met with management together with the DMR then DMR gave us as to why are they here. They came up with some issues and also that they are here as an instruction from the minister and they came to do some audits especially the affected departments. They requested us to have some representatives in all the departments and all the responsible DMR inspectorate . We gave the members from Num and they are going to deal with the audits,” said Num’s regional spokeperson Abbey Hlakoana.
