“Small businesses play significant role in creating employment”

The President of the Black Business Council, Sandile Zungu, says the economy needs to be reconfigured to make it easier for people to find jobs.

Zungu was speaking after the close of the 2018 Jobs Summit at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says a Presidential Jobs Committee will focus on the implementation of a framework agreement to help create 275 000 jobs per year.

Zungu says small businesses play a significant role in creating employment opportunities.

“I think the lowest hanging fruit in a situation like this has got to be small business. Most businesses are the ones that respond very quickly to creating jobs. They are the ones we have to rely on for the economy. So when we talk about incentives for small businesses on the tax and cost side in terms of subsidies, you have to see that as a low hanging fruit. That is where, generally, even the most uneducated can get involved in the tourism sector,” says Zungu.
