The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) says it has received the first tranche of its budget allocation from the National Treasury.

There have been delays in this year’s allocation to NSFAS, which has led to beneficiaries not receiving their allowances.

Some students from universities and TVET colleges say they cannot afford to pay for food and accommodation due to the delay.

Students have been negatively affected by the delay:

In a statement, NSFAS says it will start disbursing funds to institutions of higher learning by this coming Friday.

The student funder had earlier appealed to universities and colleges to issue allowance advances to NSFAS students.

Meanwhile, representatives of students from various institutions of higher learning under the umbrella of the South African Students Union will meet on Tuesday to discuss delays in the disbursement of NSFAS funds.
