Eastern Cape Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Xolile Nqatha has been appointed acting Health MEC while Sindiswa Gomba recovers after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Gomba received her results last month.

The Eastern Cape Premier’s Spokesperson, Mvusiwekhaya Sicwetsha says, “MEC Gomba is on sick leave. She has been allowed time to recuperate after she recovered from COVID-19. So the Acting MEC is holding the fort for the while and she will be back soon.”

Last year, Free State MECs for Education and Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Tate Makgoe and Thembeni Nxangisa respectively, Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development Tasneem Motara and Mpumalanga public works, roads and  transport MEC, Gillion Mashego tested positive for the coronavirus.

Two senior E Cape Legislature members test positive

Speaker of Eastern Cape Legislature Helen Sauls-August, African National Congress Deputy Chief-Whip Kholiswa Fihlani and a staff member have all tested positive for the coronavirus.

They are currently in self-isolation.

The provincial legislature is currently in recess until January 18.

Legislature Spokesperson Lwandile Sicwetsha says, “The Speaker urges Eastern Cape citizens to remain compliant with all COVID-19 health and safety regulations of wearing a mask, observing a social and physical distance and regularly sanitising or washing of hands. She encourages all those who show flu symptoms to self-isolate.”
