NPA yet to finalise Life Esidimeni cases

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The National Prosecuting Authority says it’s yet to finalise the Life Esidimeni cases.

Forty-five inquest dockets are awaiting a decision on whether to prosecute – key former senior health officials possibly among them.

Murder or culpable homicide charges may follow.

About 144 patients died of starvation and dehydration after being transferred to unlicensed NGO’s from 2015. More than twenty mentally ill patients are still missing.

All Sidanani Moloi wanted to do was bury his son, Fannie. Fannie was transferred before the deadly 2015 marathon project.

He was moved from Life Esidimeni Baneng to the Waverly Centre without his family’s knowledge.

Fannie died in 2016 and was buried, but his relatives were only told in April.

Fannie’s mother says although he did not die during the botched transfers, his death points to a dysfunctional Gauteng Health department.

The mother still wants answers.

During the arbitration hearings, it was revealed that the department failed to pay NGOs on time.

Months later, the Democratic Alliance (DA) is accusing the Gauteng government of similar transgressions.

The NPA says it needs more time to investigate who should be held responsible for the deaths.

The Moloi’s pain is somewhat eased, knowing their son has been laid to rest.

Unlike more than twenty other Esidimeni families, who still do not know where their loved ones are.
