Reading Time: 2 minutes

The NPA says more witnesses are likely to testify in the case against EFF leader Julius Malema and his co- accused Adriaan Snyman in the East London Magistrates’ Court.

The pair is facing charges of illegal possession of a firearm, contravention of the Firearms Control Act, the illegal possession of ammunition and reckless endangerment to persons or property.

It is alleged that Malema discharged a firearm during the celebrations of the party’s 5th anniversary at the Sisa Dukashe stadium in Mdantsane in 2018. Forensic Ballistic Analyst, Mandisi Mgwadleka was the only witness to take the stand on Thursday.

Magwadleka was tasked to examine a cartridge that was picked up by a cleaner after the celebrations at the Sisa Dukashe stadium.

The trial continues on Friday. NPA Regional Spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali says, “We do have a number of witnesses that will take a stand  but that will depend on the  direction the case takes. So I’m unable to tell you as to how many that are still to come but when we resume after the postponement,  I can assure you  that there will be more witnesses to be called by the state.”

Earlier, there were delays to the beginning of the day’s court proceedings due to a security threat.
