Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula elected National Assembly Speaker

Former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has been elected as the new Speaker of the National Assembly in South Africa.

The vacancy occurred following the recent appointment of former Speaker Thandi Modise to cabinet as new Defence Minister.

The African National Congress (ANC) officially nominated Mapisa-Nqakula, while the Democratic Alliance (DA) nominated Dr Annelie Lotriet as its candidate.

Election of the new Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa

There has been much criticism from the opposition and others of the ANC’s nomination of Mapisa Nqakula – with some saying she faces serious claims of corruption. Judge President John Hlophe of the Western Cape High Court announced the result of the secret ballot.

The National Assembly has responded to a letter from a group called the New Nation Movement threatening legal action against the election of former Defence Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, as Speaker of the National Assembly.
