Level 1 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is seen at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, as the number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases grow around the world, in London, Britain April 1, 2020.

The Northern Cape Department of Health has placed two of its senior officials who are facing Personal Protective Equipment fraud charges, on precautionary suspension.

The former acting head of department and the chief financial officer allegedly awarded PPE procurement contracts totaling 43 million rand to two companies without following proper procedure.

Dr Dion Theys and Daniel Gaborone appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court this week and were granted R20 000 bail each.

“Following the arrest of the chief financial officer and the former acting head of department, the Department has placed both officials on precautionary suspension whilst investigations are undertaken. The internal processes are covered by issues of employee/employer confidentiality agreements and the court procedures are under judicial consideration and therefore prohibited from public discussion elsewhere. Therefore, the department will not comment further on this matter,” said Provincial Health spokesperson Lebogang Majaha.
