Artists attending the Northern Cape Sports, Arts and Culture Art Summit have questioned its relevance to the industry.

Some artists regard the summit, the second so far, as non-beneficial.  They say the department should rather fund them than spending money on summits.

Some artists are however hopeful that these events will help them in the long run.

“I am always a number one in the province for traditional dance, been winning the competition, but there is no promotion or development that has been implemented on us. So these are the challenges that we are facing here. There’s nepotism in this industry, there is tribalism, there is sex notion in this industry so our leaders must bring transparency and maybe it will be better,” says artist Thabang Mohale.

Northern Cape MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Bongiwe Mbinqo-Gigaba, says the department can’t fund all the artists in the province.

“This artist summit must be able to give us an idea as a department which way must we move to, understand their challenges. A fundamental challenge which always comes to me is funding, which the department won’t be able to solve. It doesn’t have capacity to fund every artist.”
