Northern Cape ANC calls for recounting of ballots from Siyacuma Municipality

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The African National Congress (ANC) in the Northern Cape has called for a recount of 24 ballots from the Siyacuma Municipality in a ward that the party lost to an independent candidate.

The ballots were unstamped and previously thought to be spoilt, but the ANC lodged a dispute and the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is in Douglas for the recount.

The municipality is currently one of the 10 hung councils in the province.

Independent candidate, Benjamin Makabe, has questioned the recount.

He says, “They are arguing about 24 ballots that are supposed to be opened up from a box, of which we don’t know which box it is? The ballots that were signed off by officials of the IEC which is the presiding officers and the party agents of which all agree that because of the ballots that were not stamped, they are not valid ballot papers.”

“That’s why we are saying today, as we are standing here there is no way that this thing is going to happen. That those ballots are going to be opened.”
