North West ANC members aggrieved by elective conference delays

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Some African National Congress (ANC) members in the North West have expressed dissatisfaction with the delays in holding the party’s provincial elective conference.

The long-awaited elective conference has been postponed for the second time.

The conference was scheduled for this coming weekend. The party’s Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) says not meeting a 70% threshold to constitute a legitimate conference has caused the postponement.

A branch in Ward 3 in the Matlosana Local Municipality in Klerksdorp is among those that are not happy about the delay.

Branch spokesperson Lopang Rothmans says, “It has been our call that the IPC of the North West, for the past four years, that it has been unable to unite and establish branches of the ANC. We will continue to call that the IPC should be dissolved and that the ground should be levelled. Either bring national organisers to come and work here to ensure that we establish branches of the ANC and prepare for the provincial conference.”

Reasons behind delay

ANC IPC Coordinator, Hlomani Chauke, says the delay is a result of the party’s new membership system.

“There is a delay, we accept that, but it is not deliberate. It’s because where in which we are now, rebuilding the ANC and this system that is helping us to rebuild the ANC we had to adhere to that. We have to work within the new system of membership which in fact has made it very difficult for those who normally will rig the branches, rig the branches and pay people or either collect ID books for people who are not even in the meeting.”

Weak management

Political Analyst Professor Andre Duvenhage has attributed the conference’s delay to the ANC’s weak management of its structures.

“There are problems within the management structures of the ANC….since 2017 maybe even before that, and that is going to make it extremely difficult to get a legitimate outcome,” says Duvenage.

Meanwhile, several ANC big guns in the North West province have joined the race for the chairpersonship of the party.

Among them are former chairpersons, Supra Mahumapelo and Nono Maloyi and current Premier, Bushy Maape.
