The North West Health Department says it has put measures in place measure to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
The country is currently experiencing a second wave of coronavirus infections, which have led to government announcing tighter lockdown restrictions.
Provincial Health MEC Madoda Sambatha says the measures include rapid testing.
Sambatha says anyone who is found to be infected with COVID-19 needs to ensure that they isolate so that they guard against infecting other community members.
Meanwhile, some residents in the province are worried about those who are non-compliant.
“We understand that it will be nice out there during the festive season, but you should comply because that comes from within you. You should not do it for the president,” says one resident.
Another says: “Honestly speaking, the numbers in terms of the new infections are very high. Our young people do not comply.”
Revised lockdown restrictions
On Monday evening, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced some revised lockdown measures in a bid to mitigate the impact of the second wave of the coronavius.
Ramaphosa said KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng are leading the second wave.
The restrictions, which apply across the country, include:
- Alcohol at retail outlets sold Monday to Thursday from 10am – 6pm
- No on-site alcohol consumption at licensed establishments after 10pm
- No consumption of alcohol in public spaces, including beaches and parks
- A revised curfew starting at 11pm – 4am (not applicable to essential workers)
